elephant migration routes aerial zoom

Posted by chance in + knowledge

this is a series of images from bbc natural world: elephants without borders

the migration paths are a hundred generations old, forming a network across the kalahari, leading to places where there is water.

elephant highways, incredible.

here is the gps data of an elephant in botswana:

the elephants are collared with a gps unit that can transmit data through radio frequency up to 20 miles. after the battery dies in the unit, the collar is removed.

strapping electronics onto animals and using them to collect data is interesting to me.

“At the moment, mass production is completely in control of the market, while we (consumers) are looking for one-of-a-kind products. A beautiful product alone is not enough, we like to hear the story and see the marks of craftsmanship and not the influence of a ’styling’ designer. The ideal situation would be the designer looking over the shoulder of the consumer at the product and sharing his or her enthusiastic wonder about how it works. The product should be a life-long friend.” - Arnout Visser
